“I was beaten on my soles until the skin cracked. I was beaten by two men with an iron rod. They did it in turns. They couldn’t bear it any longer, but the problem was that I had to bear more. It was Easter -Holy Thursday night; I heard the bells ringing in the nearby church. And I suddenly remembered that Jesus had also been beaten. And just as Jesus had cried out in a loud voice on the cross - Eli, Eli, lama sabactani, so I began repeating Jesus! Jesus!” Fr. Tertulian Langa

In 1948 the communist regime in Romania liquidated the Greek-Catholic Church one of the eastern rites of the Catholic Church, forcing it to unite with the Orthodox Church. All seven bishops and a number of priests and laymen who refused to renounce unity with Rome, were arrested. Tertulian Langa, a 26 year-old lawyer, philosopher and theologian, spent 17 years in prison. This is his story.
